Green Is Trending In More Ways Than One

Never iron a four-leaf clover because you don’t want to press your luck!

St. Patrick’s Day – Top of the morning to ye! On March 17th you risk the chance of being pinched if you don’t wear green. While we don’t condone this type of behavior, it most certainly has momentum with friends and family. Unconfirmed folklore states that leprechauns are behind this pinching tradition and that they like to pinch people (but can’t see those folks that do wear green). Those unsuspecting people that forego the green attire or accessory leave themselves open to this leprechaun assault. Again, this is completely unverified, and we have absolutely nothing factual to substantiate this story.

Secondhand Shopping

With the spotlight on green, we turn our thoughts to sustainability as a trending design for 2022.  Interior Designers and homeowners are on a mission to seek out more sustainable products and materials. Not just for the here and now, but as a stronghold into the future. Buying second hand from a thrift or antique store or repurposing an item is a fantastic way to bring a unique and unexpected aesthetic to your home. Having a mixture of these pieces is not only eco-friendly but blends the old and new together to breathe life into a tired space. Also, a vintage piece tells a story and reclaims an untold piece of history.

Green is the new neutral

More than ironically, green is also the interior design color that is being embraced for 2022. The lush hues of green are emerging as the most popular choice of interior design color and edging out the ever-prominent blue. Green represents calmness and tranquility, reminding us of the outdoors and the desire to engage with nature. Bringing in more of the outdoors to stay connected to nature, people are also incorporating more natural materials, which would include wicker, rattan, and plants. They are truly embracing the biophilic design aesthetic as they experiment with plant covered walls or other unique plant hanging groupings. Biophilic motifs can bring harmony into the home and provides us with a feeling of well-being and healthy living.

Outdoor living

As we work to bring the outdoors inside, we are also simultaneously focusing on making the outdoors just as welcome and cozy. Having been confined for way too long, we find ourselves longing for the fresh air of the outdoors. If the past two years has taught us anything, it is to create comfortable and welcoming space for family in the sanctuary of your own backyard. These spaces have become an extended part of our home as we explore the extensive outdoor furniture design choices. We have become more creative and no longer view these areas as just empty space. People are also seeking and using durable and sustainable pieces for the outdoors, as part of a reformed economy. One where we ditch the disposable approach and embrace our responsibility as stewards of our environment, not only for ourselves but for generations to come.

Books are back and being repurposed

For a while, the e-book had captured the attention of many avid readers, and still does. While e-books have proven to be convenient, especially for travel, some have expressed missing the tactical and visual sensation of holding and reading a paper bound book. Well, the good news is books are back! Not only for reading but in curating decorations as well. Whether you read them, stack them, or build a table or stairs out of them, they have emerged from hiding and have taken on a new status symbol. Your local secondhand store is a wonderful place to find these treasures. This is yet another way to repurpose something, turning used into new and creating a conversation piece in your own home.

We are embracing March as a new beginning to learning about and working towards a more sustainable future. Prescott City and Prescott Valley both have a variety of second hand and antique stores with unique and unusual finds. Each trip is a true treasure hunt, and you never know what you will discover.  Here is a list of just a few local stores (there are plenty of others not listed) that might be holding your cache of future treasures.

We wish you many blessings on this search and may your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow.
